CBD and sleep: a medical opinion
To delve deeper into the topic of CBD and sleep, we interviewed Dr. Lorenzo Calvi, a medical doctor specialized in anesthesia, resuscitation, pain therapy, and pharmacology. The doctor Calvi told us that when patients start taking CBD, for example for chronic pain, they begin to notice benefits. Among the first is precisely the positive effect on sleep quality.
As we know, CBD is able to interact with our endocannabinoid system, a system that regulates various functions of the human body. When the endocannabinoid system receives an external signal, in this case provided by CBD, it adjusts accordingly to restore homeostasis.
A judging by patient feedback, the endocannabinoid system's first reaction to the CBD signal is to almost instantly rebalance the sleep-wake cycle.
How does CBD affect sleep?
The doctor Calvi explained to us that cannabidiol acts on various systems of our body, the most sensitive to its signal being the central and peripheral nervous systems and the immune system. The central nervous system is precisely what allows us to fall asleep, so there is a direct action by CBD. Furthermore, the doctor points out that CBD's characteristic of relaxing muscles, as if it were a muscle relaxant, helps to relax the body and gently ease into sleep. Cannabidiol acts on the GABAergic system just like benzodiazepines do, but unlike the latter, it does not cause any chemical alteration and stimulates it, promoting sleep onset. According to Calvi, its strength lies in always remaining harmless to our body, without altering its functions or chemical mechanisms, as can happen with some medications used for sleep. Although CBD improves sleep quality, it never has a sedative effect, precisely because of its gentle and natural action.
Which CBD oil for sleeping?
For sleep, it is advisable to use a CBD oil that also contains melatonin, in order to promote not only falling asleep but also the restoration of the sleep-wake cycle. This type of product can be alternated with a CBD oil ranging from 10 to 30% to work on anxiety and stress, or you can use a product that contains CBD and natural extracts with relaxing properties.
CBN (cannabinol): the sleep-friendly cannabinoid
The CBN or cannabinol is a fitocannabinoid that is produced by the Cannabis sativa plant in its most advanced growth stage. More precisely, CBN is produced through the oxidation process of THC, but unlike the latter, it appears to have no psychotropic effects.
Long considered a byproduct of THC, CBN has recently been rediscovered and reevaluated. Having become the subject of numerous scientific studies to assess its properties, it is one of the most interesting new cannabinoids in terms of effects.
- Like many other cannabinoids, cannabinol is also able to bind to the CB1 and CB2 receptors present in our endocannabinoid system. This process produces various positive effects on our body.
- Working in synergy with CBD in the CBNight formula, CBN enhances its relaxing properties
- A study suggests that CBN could be useful in case of ADHD, that is attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, often linked to sleep disorders. During a study conducted on adults diagnosed with ADHD after a high dose of pure CBN, a lower ASRS score (that is the diagnostic questionnaire through which diagnosis can be made) was associated compared to other groups.
CBD and melatonin
CBD and melatonin together are an innovative and effective combination to combat sleep disorders.
Melatonin is an endogenous hormone produced by the pineal gland essential for synchronizing the sleep-wake cycle. This hormone is released at night because it is activated only in the dark. Its secretion stops when a light stimulus reaches the retina, signaling the pineal gland, which automatically stops secreting this hormone, which has very low peaks during the day and reaches its highest peak during the night hours. Melatonin is very low during the first years of life, then gradually increases and decreases again in old age due to the calcification of the pineal gland. The endogenous production of melatonin is continuously threatened by factors such as the stress, theexposure to light sources or simply the advancing of age.
Here is why taking a melatonin supplement before going to bed is highly recommended by doctors and nutritionists.

Sleep is not a linear process, but is composed of several interconnected stages. Some people may experience problems in one or more of these stages, but most people who suffer from sleep disorders face:
