Together with the CBD and to the CBG, CBN is one of the most promising phytocannabinoids available on the market, as well as one of the best known for treating insomnia and sleep disorders. Several scientific studies have shown that it can induce a state of relaxation without the unwanted psychoactive effect of THC. Let's get to know this cannabinoid better.

What does CBN mean?

CBN is the acronym for cannabinol, a cannabinoid of Cannabis Sativa L, first identified in 1940. CBN is a cannabinoid that can be found in the Cannabis Sativa L plant, particularly in aged inflorescences. Pharmacologically relevant amounts are formed as a metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Unlike other cannabinoids, CBN does not derive directly from cannabigerol (CBG) or cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), but is rather the degraded product of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA).

Many of the major cannabinoids, such as THC, are present in raw hemp as cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), a substance that is processed and broken down by the plant's natural enzymes into cannabigerol (CBG).

When the natural enzymes of Cannabis break down CBGA, it transforms into a set of substances that includes cannabigerol (CBG), the aforementioned THCA, cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and finally cannabichromenic acid (CBCA). It is through this chemical process that CBN begins to take shape.

When exposed to heat, THCA transforms into delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), while THCA, when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun, transforms into cannabinolic acid (CBNA).

When this last chemical compound is exposed to heat, it finally transforms into cannabinol (CBN) through a chemical process called decarboxylation, which involves the loss of certain chemical groups from its molecular structure.

What effect does CBN have?

Unlike THC, CBN does not cause psychoactive effects but is known for its relaxing, calming, and mildly sedative effects, making it an essential ingredient in natural products designed to improve sleep quality. Additionally, several studies suggest that CBN has pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties.

The properties of CBN

Let's look at some of the main features of CBN:

  • has relaxing and slightly sedative properties

The first scientific evidence of the relaxing and mildly sedative properties of CBN dates back many years, to 1975 to be precise, the year in which it was published a study on Pharmacology, conducted on a sample of five adult men. The volunteers were administered both THC and CBN on two separate occasions. The subjects involved in the study reported feeling much sleepier after taking cannabinol compared to when they had taken THC

  • has pain-relieving properties

CBN has pain-relieving properties; it can modulate pain perception by directly acting on the activity of neurons responsible for processing signals from nerve fibers. Like a studio highlights, CBN is able to influence the activity of nerve fibers of neurons sensitive to capsaicin, which is the molecule that characterizes spicy foods; contrary to what one might think, spiciness is not a taste, but a painful sensation, and for this reason capsaicin is not bound by the taste receptors of the tongue or palate, that is, the molecules that allow us to perceive flavors. One studio from 2019 also found that the combination of CBN and CBD is effective in relieving myofascial pain, which is often caused by physical injuries or the overuse of certain muscles during daily and work activities or is present in some diseases such as fibromyalgia.

These results suggest that cannabinoids can be incredibly useful in treating painful conditions without the potentially harmful side effects or risk of addiction associated with current opioid pain treatments

  • has anti-inflammatory properties

A comprehensive review published in the FASEB Journal examined the effect of numerous compounds found in Cannabis sativa species. Of the twelve examined, CBN was able to reduce inflammation associated with arthritis in laboratory mice, and we expect similar results in humans. The review also concluded that the compounds were "generally free of adverse effects." The researchers noted that the mechanism of action of CBN is different from that of NSAID anti-inflammatory drugs, but still leads to a reduction in inflammation.

  • Has neuroprotective properties

The anti-inflammatory properties may also be involved in the protective effect on the central nervous system, a concept known as "neuroprotection." A study conducted by the University of Washington concluded that the administration of CBN was able to delay the onset of a neurodegenerative disease known as "amyotrophic lateral sclerosis," more commonly known as ALS. The researchers concluded that treatment with CBN at 5mg/kg/day "significantly delays the onset of the disease by more than two weeks, while survival was not affected."

  • has appetite-stimulating properties

Based on data from various laboratory test At the University of Reading, it was discovered that CBN is an agent that stimulates appetite in mice, leading to an increase in food consumption and behaviors aimed at obtaining food. The therapeutic approach of CBN could therefore be useful as a drug to restore the sense of hunger in patients who have lost their appetite due to certain pathologies.

  • Has antibacterial properties

According to a study conducted in 2008, CBN appears to have antibacterial properties. It seems to be effective against bacteria belonging to the genus Staphylococcus, resistant to the most common antibiotics, defined as "MRSA" bacteria. Although the mechanism of action has not been identified, the study reported solid results and demonstrated a role for CBN in this regard.

  • Helps reduce intraocular pressure in cases of glaucoma

One studio Highlights that CBN is capable of reducing intraocular pressure, which is the pressure inside the eye that, if elevated, characterizes a clinical condition called "glaucoma." Glaucoma causes a series of damages to the anatomical structures of the eye, from the retina to the optic nerve, leading to vision disturbances and eventually blindness. Many consumers affected by glaucoma have reported benefits from using CBN, which was confirmed by a 2007 study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem that examined the effect of cannabinoids on diseases and health in general.

How does CBN work on sleep disorders?

Le proprietà leggermente sedative del CBN sono date dalla sua interazione con i recettori CB1 e CB2 del endocannabinoid system human. Cannabinoids such as CBN and CBD bind to these receptors, and from their binding originates a cascade of cellular signals that regulate a very large number of cell functions.

The two best-known cannabinoid receptors are the endocannabinoid receptor 1 (CB1), which is primarily distributed in the central nervous system (which is the system responsible for falling asleep and regulating the sleep-wake cycle), and the endocannabinoid receptor 2 (CB2), which is instead mostly present in the cells and tissues of the immune system.

When CBN is taken, the receptors of the endocannabinoid system interact with the active ingredient, which can exert a relaxing and slightly sedative effect helping to induce the falling asleep phase and to maintain sleep throughout the night.

How to take CBN for sleep?

The best way to use CBN for sleep è usarlo insieme a CBD e melatonina, in una formula sinergica sviluppata appositamente per i disturbi del sonno. CBNight è un elixir based on cannabinoids and melatonin, developed to improve sleep quality, treat REM sleep disorders, and prevent nighttime awakenings.

Since sleep disorders can be mild or chronic, CBNight is available in two versions.

Formula, with 125 mg of CBN, 125 mg of CBD, and 9 g of melatonin. Ideal for those who suffer from mild insomnia, for those who want to sleep well through every phase of sleep, and for those who have difficulty maintaining deep sleep.

Formula Plus, with 250 mg of CBN, 250 mg of CBD, and 9 g of melatonin, is suitable for those who are losing precious hours of sleep due to chronic insomnia, for those suffering from jet lag, for those with a severe disruption of the sleep-wake balance, and who have tried various natural remedies against insomnia.

The CBN is also present in our CBNight capsules, which contain CBD, lavender, and chamomile and have been developed to work on the quality of awakening and sleep disorders caused by anxiety.

How does CBNight work?

While CBN has a direct effect on sleep, CBD relaxes the muscles and mind, preparing for an ideal state of relaxation for falling asleep. Contributing decisively to nighttime rest is melatonin, the natural regulator of the sleep-wake cycle. The amount of melatonin we naturally produce can be threatened by various factors, which is why taking small extra amounts leads to better sleep quality and a restoration of the circadian rhythm.

CBNight is a decisive aid for sleep hygiene; its use combats all forms of insomnia and restores the natural sleep cycle, improving nighttime rest and morning awakening.

The recommended dosage is one ml before going to bed. Remember that sleeping well will improve your concentration, mood, and attention span during the day.

What is the difference between CBD and CBN?

The CBD (cannabidiol) and the CBN (cannabinol) are both cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, but they differ in origin and effects. CBD is known for its properties anxiolytics e anti-inflammatory, helping to relax the body and mind without directly inducing drowsiness. CBN, on the other hand, is derived from the degradation of THC and has a potential sedative and antibacterial. These two cannabinoids can complement each other to multiply the beneficial effects on sleep quality: CBD prepares the ground by reducing anxiety and tension, while CBN promotes deeper sleep. Used together, they harness theentourage effect, namely the synergistic effect of multiple cannabinoids, enhancing overall effectiveness and offering a more balanced solution for those seeking relief from insomnia.
